The Cincinnati Reds were coming off of a losing series to the Toronto Blue Jays, they were trying to rebound and beat another AL East team, the New York Yankees. Yup, the New York Yankees. Reds fans, and some Yankees fans packed the house, 41,000 strong came to watch this game. Majority of them were obviously Reds fans, and majority of them went home disappointed since the Reds lost 5-3. Here is how.
Dusty Baker announced that Travis Wood would pitch today, rather than Johnny Cueto since Johnny had some issues with his neck. So Travis Wood took the hill today, and did not have a good 1st inning at all. He allowed 4 runs to score, those 4 runs really hurt the Reds.
Cincinnati got on the board in the 1st when Joey Votto hit into a double-play, but Stubbs would score, 4-1.
Then the team from the Bronx would add a run in the 8th when Jose Arredondo threw a wild pitch, Curtis Granderson came across to score to make it 5-1. But hold up, after the Grandy-man reached, he attempted to steal, a perfect throw came from Hanigan, but Paul Janish dropped the ball, Curtis went to 3rd then scored on the wild pitch. Paul Janish is not playing well on defense, and is not good with the bat, he needs to get on a bus and head to Louisville.
5-1 would remain the score until the 9th. In the bottom of the 9th the Reds were trying to rally and win the game. Well, they would score 1 run when Scott Rolen hit an infield single to plate Votto, 5-2. Then Chris Heisey hit one back to the pitcher Rivera, he threw to 2nd to get the out, the relay to 1st was not in time, so the Reds were still alive, and a run scored. 5-3 the score. Then Edgar Renteria came up to bat representing the tying run. He had a 7 pitch AB, but eventually was sent down on strikes to end the game.
The only positive thing the Reds can take from this game is that they kept the best home run hitting team in the park. There were no home runs in this game, pretty crazy.
The Reds are not at the level of teams like the Yankees, or Phillies, or a team like that, yet. But if they sent down a few guys like Lewis and Janish, and brought up Alonso and Cozart or Frazier, they would be better.
Tomorrow the Redlegs will try and even the series, game time is set for 7:10 PM ET and the game will be on Fox Sports Ohio.
