Veteran Starting Pitcher, Bronson Arroyo, and Left-Fielder Jonny Gomes will return to the Cincinnati Reds club in 2011, the Reds announced Wednesday. However, other Reds veteran starting pitcher, Aaron Harang will more than likely not return to Cincinnati.
The exercising of Bronson Arroyo's $11 Million club option was made official. The Reds also picked up the $1.75 Million option on Jonny Gomes.
Aaron Harang's $12.74 million club option was declined, as well as Veteran Shortstop, Orlando Cabrera's $4 million mutual option.
"We'll certainly continue to work on doing a multi-year extension with him," Jocketty said on Wednesday. "I don't want to go into the season negotiating. We'll try to [get it done] before the start of the season."
"It was a tough decision," Jocketty said of Cabrera, a clubhouse leader and experienced playoff veteran. "We're trying to protect ourselves with payroll and all the arbitration guys we have and the things we need to do. We're not ruling out the possibility of bringing him back, but it will be a while before we know."
The door has likely closed on Harang's time in Cincinnati, and it was certainly one of extremes. As the team struggled, he was the unqualified ace of the rotation and was 32-17 over the 2006-07 seasons, but a combined 18-38 in the three seasons since. Not only did his performance suffer, but he was also bothered by injuries that put him on the disabled list multiple times.
"He served the organization well and did his job well and was a great guy in the community," Jocketty said. "We felt it was time to turn the page and move on."
As for a player that will return, Jonny Gomes said "This saves my forehead," Gomes joked from his home in Arizona. "Last offseason, I banged it into every wall of my house being confused."
