After a Richmond turnover, the Musketeers were getting the ball out-of-bounds. #24 Richmond at Xavier preview
Tomorrow, Chris Mooney's Richmond Spiders will visit Chris Mack's Xavier Musketeers. Richmond is #24/#23, while Xavier is not ranked. Both teams sit atop the Atlantic Ten, along with the Temple Owls. Richmond is 22-6, and 11-2 in the A-10, while Xavier is 20-7, 11-2. If Xavier wins the game, they will jump into the top 25, more than likely, and Richmond will exit the rankings. If Richmond wins, they will likely move up in the rankings, and Xavier will move farther down.
Richmond has some good wins, notable ones are over at-the-time, #13 Florida, and #17 Temple. Their bad losses have been to William & Mary and Saint Louis.
Xavier's good wins have been over #25 Cincinnati, Florida, and Saint Louis. Xavier has not had many bad losses, except to Dayton and Marquette. All seven of the Musketeers losses have been road games, Xavier is perfect at home.
Xavier leads the all-time series, 10-3.

UK Gets Revenge On South Carolina With A 21-Point Win
The Kentucky Wildcats looked to get some revenge on the South Carolina Gamecocks who are the only team to have defeated UK on the season. UK would end a three-game losing streak to the Gamecocks handing Devan Downey and Darrin Horn their first loss to Kentucky in their South Carolina tenure. Patrick Pattterson and DeMarcus Cousins dominated the paint vs South Carolina and out-rebounded South Carolina 44 to 36 unlike the game in Columbia. John Wall broke the freshman record for free throws made in a single season tonight. Kentucky puts themselves in great position to claim their 44th SEC Title with one more win or a Vanderbilt loss. Kentucky will head to Knoxville to take on the Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday.

Late Surge and Hard Fighting Gives X a Win
The Xavier Musketeers (20-7, 11-2) were visiting the Saint Louis Billikens (18-9, 9-4). Xavier was looking to extend a three game winning streak to four. Xavier was able to do so, in a great game with the final score, 73-71.
Jason Love had 21 points in the Musketeers' W, he was also 9-of-17 from the field, and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. Love was also one board shy of the double-double, he had 9.
Even though Love looked great, it was Jordan Crawford who led all scorers with 26 points. Crawford was 11-of-20 from the field.
For SLU, Kwamain Mitchell led with 21 points and was 8-of-15 from the field.
In the first half, St. Louis had as much as a seven point lead, but both the Billikens and the Muskies played hard and St. Louis only had a two point lead at the half.
In the second half, St. Louis had as much as a six point lead, but that was too easy for XU to overcome, and with 7:33 to go, the X-men had a 13 point lead. SLU fought hard until the final buzzer, and with only 1:01 to go, the game belong to anybody, it was a two point lead for X. After Jason Love did some work, with two good free trows, with only five seconds to go, Xavier was able to hold on to their lead and win in a great one, 73-71.

"I'm really excited to be a Red....they are a well put-together team this year" Said Gomes after it was announced that he accepted the deal with Cincinnati.

Kentucky Picks Up 1st Win in Music City In 5 Years
UK holds off a tough #19 Vanderbilt squad to get a 58-56 win. This was the first victory the Cats have had since 2005 breaking a five-year losing streak at Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville. Both teams struggled from the field today. It was a defensive battle that looked more like a football game at some points. Vandy's bigs Festus Ezeli and Steve Tchiengang fouled out and the Cats would take charge of the game. Missed free throws looked like it was going to haunt the Cats but a huge block by John Wall as Vandy's John Jenkins tried to get a three point shot off and give the Commodores a lead. John Wall missed a huge free throw in the game that set up A.J. Ogilvy up for a game-winning basket but the Cats prevail to become 26-1. John Calipari admitted he made a mistake calling a timeout after Wall's free throw shots when Vandy had no timeouts left and let Vandy head coach to draw up a play that freed up A.J. Ogilvy on what would be the game-tying basket had it went it. The Cats come back home Tuesday night to face South Carolina at home, the only team to have defeated UK this season and try to end a three game skid to the Gamecocks.

Xavier Tells Charlotte, It's Not Your Birthday
By: Cooper Ledford
The Xavier Musketeers (19-7, 10-2) were visiting the Charlotte 49ers (18-8, 8-4), Saturday. This was good win for Xavier, as they are now 12 games over .500.
Jordan Crawford led the way with 23 points, while having an 8-of-15 shooting game, and was 3-of-8 behing the 3-point line. Jamel McLean added 14 points, and had 11 boards.
" Derrio Green led the 49ers and tied Crawford in scoring with 23 points of his own on 6-of-17 from the field. Shamari Spears was second in scoring for the Niners with 13 points."-- http://www.goxavier.com/
Xavier took the lead to start the game, with a three from Terrell Holloway, but the 49ers then went on a 10-4 run, and the first half was for the most part, close, but then late in the first, Xavier took a 31-22 lead at the half.
In the second half, Xavier kept the tempo, and not much into the second, XU had a 41-29 lead, and the Muskies never looked back, and won, 81-67.
Next, the Musketeers will continue the road trip, and take on a tough St. Louis team. The game is on Wednesday, at 8:00 PM ET and the game will be televised on Fox Sports Ohio.

Reds: Pitchers and Catchers reports to Goodyear
GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Gaped mouths, heads turning and guys getting lost. Yes, the Reds have definitely started Spring Training at their brand-new complex in Arizona.
Physicals were taken on Thursday morning, with an afternoon workout scheduled for pitchers and catchers on the fields.
After 12 years in Sarasota, Fla., at a facility that had grown worn-down and confining, the place in Goodyear has received rave reviews. Two thumbs up all around.
"I knew it would be beautiful, but this is beautiful," catcher Ramon Hernandez said. "When you walk in, it makes you want to play baseball, you know?"
Early-arriving position players Paul Janish and Jay Bruce walked into the spacious clubhouse and their eyes immediately lit up two steps inside the door.
"Man, everything is top-notch," Janish said. "We didn't know what to expect. Me and Jay drove here and got lost on the way over. It's kind of out in the middle of nowhere, but you couldn't ask for everything to be nicer. We have TVs everywhere. In the back equipment room, everything is roomier than it was in Sarasota."
On their chairs in front of each locker, players were given a map of the facility so they could navigate their way around.
"I still get lost and turned around and go the wrong way," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "I have trouble finding [equipment manager] Rick Stowe sometimes. It's like moving into a new house. It's exciting."
"It's unbelievable," pitcher Aaron Harang said. "I was here last Friday and came in Saturday morning. I went in and worked out and all that stuff. I was trying to leave, ended up on the wrong side in the Minor League side. I was lost over there."
Hoping to make it the type of place where players want to arrive early and leave late each day, the Reds are attempting to make their spring home comfortable but also a place where more work could get done.
Instead of four full practice fields in Florida, there are six in Arizona. There used to be one field for infield and now there are two. There are larger indoor batting cages and covered bullpens. Something that wasn't available in Sarasota but open for use now, grassy areas for agility drills and an incline where players can do cardio work on a hill.
On Thursday morning, assistant general manager Bob Miller showed off some of the office space inside the 43,000 square foot, two-story building. One of the bigger differences in what the Reds had compared to what they have now is access to video.
A dedicated video room contains about a dozen screens for Major and Minor Leaguers, and large flat-panel screens are on the wall. The video room in Sarasota was a laptop perched on top of a wood board over a laundry hamper in a hallway next to the showers.
The instructional league field has cameras set up as do the batting and pitching tunnels. All of it is available to view inside the building or remotely.
"So we can watch them from home," Miller said. "We can watch instructional league, extended spring. We don't have 20 cameras to follow the ball, but you can see the pitcher and hitter."
The main practice field, to be used for instructional league, is set up like it would be at Great American Ball Park. The only difference is the outfield dimensions because of the higher altitude and dryer air in the desert.
"It's the exact same lines, all the inserts and cutouts," Miller said. "The infield is the exact same depth."
Goodyear, a sprouting suburban town located about 20 miles west of Phoenix, is the Spring Training home of two teams. The Indians, who moved west in 2009, have their nice, new place next door to the Reds. The two teams will share Goodyear Ballpark for their home exhibition games.
There are now 15 teams in the Cactus League, with 13 of them located in the Phoenix metro area. That means less travel time for games -- and for "road" games against Cleveland, no travel at all. In Florida, the only team reasonably close to the Reds was the Pirates in Bradenton.
"Besides the facilities, they'll end up liking the weather a lot better," said 2009 first-round pick and pitcher Mike Leake, who lives in Phoenix and played for Arizona State. "You have to get used to the dry heat and make sure you're well hydrated. Once they get over that, they'll love it."
Cincinnati will debut in the Cactus League with a March 5 home game vs. the Indians.
For most of the offseason, the Reds were relatively quiet and made few notable moves. That changed by mid-January with the surprise signing of Aroldis Chapman to a six-year deal worth $30.25 million. Chapman, a Cuban defector, could very well begin the season in the Minors but will be given a shot to compete for the fifth spot in the rotation.
On Feb. 1, the Reds felt they solved their shortstop situation by signing free agent Orlando Cabrera to a one-year contract. On the same day, center fielder Willy Taveras and infielder Adam Rosales were traded to Oakland for utility player Aaron Miles.
With most of the lineup, rotation and bullpen spots set, there will be competition focused mostly on two spots -- left field and the fifth starter.
In left field, Chris Dickerson, Laynce Nix, Wladimir Balentien, Josh Anderson and top prospects Chris Heisey, Todd Frazier and Juan Francisco will seek to win jobs.
The fifth spot will be sought by Chapman but also Micah Owings, Justin Lehr and lefty prospects Matt Maloney and Travis Wood.
Only two players weren't in camp in time for the first workout. Pitchers Enerio Del Rosario and Pedro Viola were delayed leaving the Dominican Republic and missed their flight connections in the United States. Both were expected in town later in the day.
Although we don't yet know who will win these battles, or any camp surprises that might await the team, there is one thing that is crystal clear. The 58 players in camp will be whittled down to a final 25-man roster that heads back to Cincinnati for an April 5 Opening Day vs. the Cardinals.
But for now, the Reds are getting to work and enjoying their work space.
"This place is great," reliever Nick Masset said. "They did a really good job. I'm excited. This is by far the best complex I've ever played at. It's awesome, inside and outside, the fields, the mounds. You get that feeling coming to camp, you're always excited to get in and get started. When you come into a clubhouse like this, it makes it 10 times better."

Kentucky Wins Over Time Thriller vs Mississippi State
UK traveled to Starkville, Mississippi to take on the Bulldogs of Mississippi State and pulled out an 81-75 victory. This win ends a 3-game skid to the Bulldogs who Kentucky has not defeated since 2007 with Tubby Smith still the head coach of Kentucky. There were many stars of the show tonight for the Cats. Patrick Patterson was aggressive on the offensive end of the ball and had many clutch baskets for the Cats. Liggins key defense and a 3-point basket when the Bulldogs had a seven-point lead as the game was winding down. Cousins proved to be too much for the Bulldogs to handle with 19 points and 14 rebounds. John Wall was clutch and proved again to many why he is the favorite for player of the year. Wall had a near triple-double with 18 points, 10 rebounds, and 8 assists. An instant classic game in UK's history that was ruined by classless Mississippi State fans From the calls and text messages cussing and calling Cousins racial slurs. The chants "referees suck" all game, and the water bottles and stuff thrown on the court. Kentucky will travel to Nashville to take on the Vanderbilt Commodores and look to complete the season sweep over Vanderbilt.

What I LOVED about the weekend
This Valentine's weekend was awesome. Every SWO team that played won.
To start the weekend, Cincinnati visited UCONN and easily beat them, later on in the day, Xavier beat the Gators impressivly, then to wrap up the night, Kentucky beat Tennessee in a great game.
The next day, Sunday, Ohio State was visiting Illinois, and OSU ended up winning.
When all of the SWO teams play, it is not very often that they all win (thanks Cincinnati and Xavier!).

Kentucky Beats 12th Ranked Tennessee Volunteers 73-62
UK beats border-rival Tennessee in a hostile environment today at Rupp Arena. Rupp Arena was electric today with ESPN and College Game Day visiting Lexington for the premiere game of the week. Former players on hand to see this battle of top 15 ranked teams were Jodie Meeks, Chuck Hayes, Kyle Macy, Wayne Turner, Ron Mercer, Scott Padgett, Tony Delk, Cameron Mills, Jared Prickett, Jack Givens, Richie Farmer, Lukasz Obrzut, and Kenny "Sky" Walker. Kentucky at times had trouble holding off Tennessee giving up the lead at some points. Kentucky held just a one point lead at the half. The production came mostly from UK's back court today. John Wall 24 points with a few highlight-reel dunks. Eric Bledsoe stepped up and gave the Cats 16 points. Patrick Patterson and DeAndre Liggins gave a solid effort and made key plays during crucial parts of the ball game when momentum was in Tennessee's favor. The Cats go on the road to Starkville, Mississippi to take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs who have won three straight over Kentucky dating back to 2007.

By: Coop Ledford
The Xavier Musketeers (17-7) were visiting the Florida Gators (17-8), today. The Musketeers were 1-0 against SEC teams (beat LSU) and were trying to be 2-0. The Musketeers were coming off of a loss to Dayton, while the Gators were coming off of a loss to South Carolina. Xavier had the lead at the half, 40-33. However, the Gators came out into the second half on fire, they ended up tieing the game at 47, and then took the lead with a Vernon Macklin bucket, but after that, Kenny Frease made a nice jumper, tieing the game at 49. Xavier took the lead off of a three by Dante’ Jackson, and then XU never looked back.

Bengals Kick Graham Out the Door
The Cincinnati Bengals have decided that kicker, Shayne Graham, is not the kind of kicker that they want anymore. The Bengals released Graham, yesterday. In his last game, he missed two easy field goals, that could have been a difference in Cincinnati's loss to the Jets in a playoff game.
The Bengals had work outs for several kickers, to see who they want to sign. It is expected that Dave Rayner will be signed over the weekend.

Frazier tyring for MLB spot
By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com
02/08/10 4:05 PM EST
CINCINNATI -- A proud New Jersey native and resident, Reds prospect Todd Frazier had important offseason TV viewing on Thursday nights that had nothing to do with baseball. The reality hit series, "Jersey Shore," was on MTV this winter. Don't count Frazier among Jersey-ites offended by the state's setting in the controversial show.
"I loved it. I thought it was hysterical," said Frazier. "I had a blast watching that show. I was actually excited for Thursday night to watch."
That show is over for now, and in about two weeks, the offseason will be, too. Frazier will be headed somewhere that has no beach, but a desert -- and the possibility for a far better "situation."
Frazier, an infielder and outfielder that just happens to be ranked as the organization's No. 1 prospect by Baseball America, will be in Reds camp at Goodyear, Ariz., as a non-roster player seeking to make the big league roster. "Jersey Shore" aside, he's been putting in the work to earn a spot.
"Just being invited to big league camp is great," Frazier said. "You're one step away from going [to the Majors]. It's going to be competitive this year. I'm all about competition. I believe you have to earn your way to a spot in the Major Leagues, no matter who you are -- just give it your all."
Frazier, who will turn 24 on Friday, will be competing to fill a vacancy in left field against the likes of Chris Dickerson, Laynce Nix, Josh Anderson, Wladimir Balentien and fellow elite prospects Chris Heisey and Juan Francisco.
Before the Reds signed free agent Orlando Cabrera on Feb. 1, Frazier was also going to be in the mix against Paul Janish at his natural position -- shortstop. In workouts in his hometown of Toms River, N.J., Frazier took ground balls at third base, shortstop, second base and first base.
"I'm going in with the mindset that I don't know what position I will be playing," said Frazier, who was interviewed on Jan. 28. "All offseason, I've been working on every position. You never know what position they will want you at. I've heard some things, but ultimately the goal is you have to hit the ball and try to work my way into a position."
Frazier has hit well at every stop in the Minors since he was the 34th overall pick in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft. In 135 games combined with Double-A Chattanooga and Triple-A Louisville, he batted .292 with 16 home runs, 77 RBIs and a .351 on-base percentage.
Working against Frazier are his 16 games of regular-season experience in Triple-A. He also has limited experience in left field, a position he's added in the past couple of seasons -- but he has acclimated himself quickly, according to the club's reports.
After the Reds drafted Frazier, they identified other shortstops in the organization that were ahead of him. Listed as 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds, the right-handed hitter was often rated as too big to play the position.
Since 2007, Frazier has played 112 games at shortstop, 87 in left field, 35 at first base and 18 at third base. Last season, he added second base to the resume and played 37 games.
"With the different positions, you have to know where to be every single time and know the hitter," said Frazier, who is preparing for his second big league camp. "You have to know which side to be on second base or if you need to shift a little at first base."
An optimistic future was more likely after last season when Baseball America named Frazier as the Reds' No. 1 ranked prospect over players like Yonder Alonso and Francisco. It seems to indicate that one way, one spot or another, Frazier will eventually be in the Majors.
"That was cool. I really didn't expect to get it," Frazier said of the honor. "It goes to show how many good Minor Leaguers we have, because in the past three or four years, it's been somebody different. We have a great crop of players in the Minors with the Reds. It was great to see I was named No. 1. But you have to go out there and perform."
If Frazier does make the Reds' club out of camp, that would likely be more fun for him than watching the "Jersey Shore" gang fist pump their way around the dance club.

Reds Opening Day Projected Starters
By: Cooper Ledford, SWO SPORTS FOUNDER AND CEO
Pitcher-Bronson Arroyo
Catcher-Ramon Hernandez
First Baseman-Joey Votto
Second Baseman-Brandon Phillips
Shortstop-Orlando Cabrera
Third Baseman-Scott Rolen
Right Fielder-Jay Bruce
Center Fielder-Chris Dickerson
Left Fielder-Drew Stubbs
_____________________________________
The infield is not much of a question on who will be there, my predictions should be right. The only possable question is Shortstop, Paul Janish could be there, he is a whiz with the glove, but his hitting is not as good as it could be. Orlando Cabrera is a good defensive player, not as good as Paul, but good enough, and he can hit a lot better than Janish can. Last year, Cabrera had a .284 batting average in 656 at bats, while Janish batted .211 in 256 at bats. Also, Aaron Miles could be in the infield, depending on how he does in spring training, but I don't think that he is good enough to replace one of the current starters. Miles hit .185 last year in 157 at bats.
In the outfield, there is a big question mark in left field. If the Reds brought back Jonny Gomes, there in no question, he would be there. However, if Gomes does not stay with the Reds, then there are a couple of options. One is to put Drew Stubbs there, which is what I would do. Another option is to bring up Chris Heisey, who is a very talented prospect. And, you can't forget about Wladimir Balentien, who .234 average in 265 at bats. The only thing that the Reds know for sure in the outfield is that Jay Bruce will play in right field.
In pitching, Edinson Volquez will not be back until somewhere around June or July. Therefore, I would have my pitching rotation as followed: Arroyo, Cueto, Bailey, Harrang, Maloney. I would only have Maloney pitching until Volquez is fully healthy, and once he is done with is minor league assignment. If Harrang is not doing well by the All Start break, I would trade him, I have had enough of his sub .500 pitching in the last few years. After trading him, I would bring up the rookie Cuban pitcher, Aroldis Chapman to take his place, so the rotation would be as followed: Arryo, Cueto, Bailey, Volquez, Chapman. If neither Chapman nor Volquez are able to pitch next season, and Harrang gets traded, I would start Mike Lincoln and Micah Owings. Those to are not very good at starting, but if there is an emergency situation, then that's what I would do.
Behind the plate will not be much of an issue, the only two cathers are Ramon Hernandez and Ryan Hanigan, and either can start if needed. I would think that when Bronson Arroyo pitches, Ryan would be the main catcher, just because Bronson feels more comfortable around him.
Some new Reds, fresh out of the minor leagues are: Chris Valaika, Chris Heisey, Yonder Alonso, Pedro Viola, Philippe-Alexandre Valiquette, Jordan Smith, Logan Ondrusek, Sam LeCure, and Enerio Del Rosario.
Opening day is on April 5th. GO REDS!

Kentucky Beats Ole Miss 85-75
The Kentucky Wildcats held off a tired Ole Miss team who had little time to prepare to this game after playing in a delayed game vs Arkansas on Sunday. It was all smiles today for the Cats and they prove once again the media make a federal case about nothing. John Wall got back to having fun leading his team to a 10-point victory and had some phenomenal dunks that he desired to have that he hasn't had in several ball games. Cousins had another double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Wall put aside any distractions today and had 17 points and 7 assists. Another starting line up change occured as Bledsoe earned his spot back and Dodson remained in the line up taking the place of Darius Miller. Dodson had another great game with 4 threes and 14 points. The Cats will go on the road this weekend to Baton Rouge to play a struggling LSU Tigers team.

Reds Acquire INF Aaron Miles in 4-Player Deal
The Cincinnati Reds trade Utitility Player Adam Rosales and Outfielder Willy Taveras for to the Oakland Athletics Infielder Aaron Miles and a player to be named later. Questionable move by the Reds as the infield seemed pretty much set with Orlando Cabera signing with Cincinnati yesterday. Probably a move to cut dead weight off the roster and provide salary relief. Miles and GM Walt Jocketty reunite again after being together in 2006 at St. Louis when the Cardinals won the World Series. Miles hit just .185 for the Cubs last season in 74 games. The Oakland A's promptly released Willy Taveras making him a free agent. Drew Stubbs or Chris Dickerson were likely to be ahead of Taveras on the depth chart for the outfield going into this season anyway. No additional cash will be sent to either team in this deal and the Reds will pay out the remainder of Miles's $2.7 million contract. Miles has a .282 career average with a total of 16 home runs and 175 RBI's in 717 games and 2234 career at bats. Rosales spent the weekend traveling with the Reds to see fans on Cincinnati's Winter Caravan and is now packing his bags for Oakland, California.
