Cincy Takes Game 1 From Atlanta

Mike Leake pitched 6 solid innings, giving up just 1 run,
helping the Reds beat the Braves 5-1, Friday.
By:  Coop

The Cincinnati Reds were coming off of a disappointing series in Philidelphia, where they lost the series 3-1.  Today they traveled to the state of Georgia to take on the Atlanta Braves.  The Reds have one of the best offenses in the league, while the Braves have one of the best pitching staffs in the league.  But today, the Reds had a good offense as they got 5 runs, and good starting pitching from Mike Leake.  They also had excellent work in the bullpen tonight, as well as good defense.  When you have good bats, good pitching, and good defense, that means a win.  The Reds got it, 5-1.  Here is how.

In the 2nd inning, Freddy Lew (Fred Lewis) hit an RBI double to center, Scott Rolen would score, it was 1-0 Cincinnati.

2 innings later (the 4th inning), Paul Janish hit a sac bunt, he was out at 1st, but Lewis was able to score from 3rd, and the Reds had a 2-0 lead.

Then in the 5th inning the hottest player in the NL, Jay Bruce, hit an RBI single to plate Phillips, and the Redlegs were up 3-0.  Oh, and by hottest I mean hitting-wise, not looks.

Atlanta would get on the board in the 6th when Dan Uggla hit a sac fly to bring in McCann, it was 3-1.

That would remain the score going into the 9th inning.  The Reds had the lead, but were looking for some insurance runs.  They received some.  Ramon Hernandez went yard to right field, it was a 2-run dinger, Ramon's 7th long one of the year, and the score was 5-1.

Francisco Cordero came in in the bottom of the 9th and sealed the deal with a scoreless inning, allowing Cincy to get the win over the Braves.

Mike Leake got the win, as he pitched 6 innings of 7 hit, 1 run baseball.  He walked 3 and fanned 2, not too impressive of numbers there, but who really cares, he got the win and that's all that matters.  Leake now leads the team in wins, as he has 4 W's and 2 L's.

The Reds entered today in 3rd place, and 4 games behind St. Louis in the division.  The Brewers, who were 2.5 games back lost to the Giants, so the Reds gain ground there.  The Brewers are now 3 games back, while the Reds are 3.5 games back.  So we are well within striking distance of the Brewers and Cards.  We just need to get on a nice winning streak.

Tomorrow the Reds will play primetime baseball on national television, FOX will air the game.  Game time is set for 7:10 PM ET.  Should be a good one.

Reds Taste Victory...FINALLY!

By: Coop

The Reds were trying to end their 6 game losing streak tonight against the Phillies. Well, they did. The game was tied at 3 in the top of the 9th, with 2 outs, they intentionally walked Votto. Then Rolen hit a rocket to 3rd, Polonco had no play, and they were loaded for Bruce. Jay Bruce delivered, as he hit a 3 RBI double to right field, the Reds took the lead, 6-3. Cordero came in in the 9th and pitched a perfect inning to seal the deal and end the 6 game losing streak. Tomorrow the Reds will look to stay on their winning streak, and not start a losing streak. 1st pitch will be at 7:05 PM ET and will be televised on FS Ohio.

That Didn't Last Long

The Reds have optioned Todd Frazier back down to AAA Louisville and have brought up pitcher, Carlos Fisher.

Frazier just made his debut last night, and so far he has a 4 pitch career.

What was the point of brining him up if you were gonna send him right back down?  I understand recalling Fisher, as the bullpen has been used a ton recently, but still, bringing up someone for a 4 pitch AB?  C'MON MAN!

Reds Option Volquez and Smith to AAA, Bring Up Maloney and Frazier

Todd Frazier
By:  Coop

The Reds have optioned Edinson Volquez to AAA Louisville.  Volquez has been struggling mightily through out the season, especially in the 1st innings of games.

After Edinson got the news, he called out the team.

"I think everybody has to step up and start getting some runs," Volquez said. "The last five games, we've scored how many runs? Thirteen [actually 12] in five games? It's not the way we were playing last year. We're better than that."

In response to that, I say "Edinson, you need to give up less runs.  That's not the way you were a few years ago.  You're better that that."

The Reds also sent down reliever Jordan Smith for the 2nd time this year.

The Reds recalled Todd Frazier from AAA along with Matt Maloney.

Frazier will get a taste of the big leagues for the first time ever, but don't be surprised if he does very well.  In Louisville he hit .293, had 11 homers, and 33 RBI's.  He was batting .354 and had 6 homers in the month of May, so he was red-hot, hopefully he can carry it over into the bigs.

Maloney started the year with Cincinnati, and did not look all that good, but that was because he did not get enough chances to prove himself.  He was then sent back down to AAA, where he went 2-1 and had an ERA of 4.45.

Lack Of Posting

I have not posted since Tuesday, when the Reds finished their 2 game sweep of the Cubs, since then, the Reds have lost all 5 of their games.  So hopefully tonight they can get back on track against the Phillies, but that will be hard to do.  Anyways, just a heads up, I am not going to post a recap article again until the Reds win.

Reds win 7-5. Better recap tomorrow afternoon.

Bucks To Play Duke In 2011

By:  Coop

College basketball fans all over the nation are circling November 29th on their calendar.  Why?  Because on the 29th of the 10th month, the Duke Blue Devils will come to Columbus to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes.

This game will be a match-up between two very good teams, and will be part of the 13th annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

OSU is 2-3 all time against Duke, with their last game being in 2002 where the Buckeyes lost 91-79.  Ohio State's last win over the Dukies was in 1978.

"It is a great honor to be selected to play what I consider one of the premier programs in the country in Duke University" said OSU head coach, Thad Matta.  "I'm looking forward to our fans being part of such a great game here in Columbus."

6th Inning Rally Lifts Reds Past Cubs

Brandon Phillips hugs Jonny Gomes in the dugout after Gomes' home run. Gomes had been in a long slump and had shaved off his mohawk the previous day.
Jonny Gomes celebrates with teammate, Brandon Phillips, after hitting a
home run in the Reds 7-4 win over Chicago.
By:  Coop

The Cincinnati Reds were coming off of a 3 game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals.  Now, another foe was in town.  The Chicago Cubs hopped on a plane and headed towards the Queen City to take on the Reds for a 2 game series.  In the 1st game of the series Homer Bailey was on the hill for Cincy, while Carlos Zambrano was pitching for the team from the south side of the Windy City.  Bailey got roughed up early on, and his team was down 0-4, but a 6th inning rally by the Reds allowed them to win 7-4, here is how.

The 1st run of the game came in the 5th inning when Zambrano hit one to 3rd, Rolen came plateward with it, the throw went under Hanigan's legs, Pena was able to come in and score a run, 1-0 Chi-Town.  Same inning, Barney hit an RBI single, Zambrano scored, it was 2-0.

Then in the Cubbies 6th inning Carlos Pena hit a 2-run homer to right field, and the score was 4-0.  That was Pena's 4th homer of the year, 2nd against the Reds.

Many Reds fans, including myself, we saying to themselves "Oh boy, 4 runs, I dunno if we can do it.  Looks like this winning streak will come to and end."  But then we all remembered something.  We are the Reds, we never give up.  Some maybe, just maybe, we can get a rally at some point, take the lead, and win the game.

Well it happened.

The Reds had a 7 run 6th inning.  The first 3 runs were scored by RBI singles by Votto, Phillips, and Bruce.  Then a Scott Rolen RBI double, and just like that the game was tied at 4.  Then a wild pitch allowed Bruce to come home from 3rd to give the Reds the lead. Then, with a man on and 1 out, Jonny Gomes came up to bat. Gomes had not hit a home run since mid-April.  But on May 16th, he went yard to right center field for a 2-run home run, his 7th long ball of the year.  You wanna talk about a guy that really needed a home run, well then talk about Jonny Gomes.  Hopefully that will end his terrible slump, and will get him back into the groove of things.

7-4 was the score after the 6th inning, and the best part about it, Homer Bailey was now eligible to get the win, well as long as his bullpen could keep the Cubs from scoring 3 runs.  Well, LeCure, Bray, and Cordero were able to do so.

Homer Bailey needs to go buy everyone involved in that 6th inning rally a nice dinner for saving him from getting the loss.  Or he could simply just say thanks, either one.  Homer is now 3-0.  Coco Cordero picked up the save, his 8th of the year in 9 attempts.

The Reds will look for the sweep in game 2 at 7:10 PM ET.  Edinson Volquez will pitch for Cincinnati, while Matt Garza will climb the hill for Chicago.  The game will be televised on Fox Sports Ohio.

Chapman Placed On DL, Smith Recalled

By:  Coop

Reds hard-throwing lefty, Aroldis Chapman, was placed on the DL, while reliever, Jordan Smith was called from AAA Louisville.

Chapman is being placed on the DL due to left shoulder inflammation.  You could tell something had to be wrong yesterday when Aroldis came in and walked 4 batters and threw barley any strikes.

Jordan Smith started the year for Cincinnati, but was sent down to make room for Homer Bailey and Johnny Cueto.

Francisco Cordero/Gerald Laird Incident

By:  Coop

Today during the Reds game, as many fans saw on TV, Francisco Cordero and Gerald Laird were exchanging some words with each other via yelling.

To read an extremely biased Cardinal article click HERE.

Okay, well if you did not click on that link the rest of the article will not make much since to you.  I suggest you go read that (poor) article, so you can hear my thoughts on it.

Okay, so the reason why Laird was mad was because Cordero hit Albert Pujols in the 9th inning.  Okay, I understand that you are mad, you don't want your players to get hurt.  And by the way, I highly doubt this was intentional, I mean Pujols became the tying run, plus Cordero had 2 strikes on Albert.  No way that was intentional.  STL Sports Minute agrees with me on that.  But, they say that the yelling after the game could have easily been avoided, and also added that like most Reds, Cordero is classless.

Hold up, who started this again?  Gerald Laird.  What team does he play for?  The Cardinals.  And like that brawl the Cards and Reds had last August, the Red Birds are trying to act like they did nothing wrong.  Nothing wrong?  Then if they did nothing wrong Francisco Cordero wouldn't have been mad.  He wouldn't have got mad is Laird simply said "Hey, don't hit our guys.".  Laird obviously added some colorful language into that, and probably called Francisco something other than his name.

Why would he do that?  Because he is classless.

Yeah that's right, I said classless.  It's Lairds fault this happen, and like some other Cardinals players (Chris Carpenter), he does not know how to behave himself.

Now STL Sports Minute may just be mad because a hated team just swept them.  But I don't know for sure. This makes me admire Brandon Phillips.  The Cardinals really do just complain (not the word he used) about everything they possibly can.

STL Sports Minute adds this in their article:
The Reds are good.  They are really good, lets at least acknowledge that.  But they never will become a "real winner" with all of the on-field antics and foolery that persistently rears its ugly head with that ball club.

Well, yes the Reds are good.  But what?  Not a real winner?  Well, I am pretty sure we won the NL Central last season, is that winning?  And adding all that other crap saying "on-field antics" etc. Wow.

Let me just clear this up.  This is how I feel about the Cardinals/Reds situation.

Brandon Phillips had every right to say what he did about the Cardinals last year.  They really do just complain about everything and have an excuse for everything.  He is 100% correct, and Cards fans know that too.  And another thing, Cardinals players can't act like they never say anything ugly about another team in the locker room.  Hal McCoy was never even supposed to write that, and quite frankly, he mad a huge mistake in doing so.

Now let's talk about the actual brawl last year.  Okay, it was just a verbal exchange between Phillips and Molina.  Then the great Chris Carpenter had to be the first one on the field and get everyone else to follow.  He is a huge reason why it ever happened.  Then it got ugly when Johnny Cueto was pinned against the backstop.  He was either going to get hurt pretty badly, or he could start kicking trying to tell people to get away.  So he went with the 2nd option.  An option me and you would have went with too.  What do you want him to do--just stand there and take it?  I dunno about you, but I would want out of there, and wouldn't want to be involved in it, so I would start doing anything to get out of it.

This is also in the article:
The Cardinals and their fans should be smiling.  Yes the lost this series and the Reds were superior this weekend.  But the Reds once again are showing that they are a weak team psychologically.

Well Cardinals fans should be smiling that it is only May, and there is plenty of season left.  The Reds should be smiling because the Cards are once again showing that they are a weak team psychologically, and a weak team when it comes to playing the game of baseball as well.

It's unbelievable how bad of fans a city in Missouri can have.

Reds Hold On To Complete Sweep

Reds starter Travis Wood gave up two runs over six innings.
Travis Wood got the win in the Reds 9-7 win over
the Cardinals, Sunday.

In front of 24,672 rain-drenched fans, the Reds were trying to complete the sweep of their foes, the St. Louis Cardinals.  Well, they got it, but barley, 9-7 the final, here is how.

Another point of interest in this game was the Reds debut of Jose Arredondo.  Jose pitched in the 7th inning, and had a 1-2-3, 12 pitch inning.  Looked good.

Tomorrow the Reds will play host to another enemy of theirs, the Chicago Cubs.  This will be the 1st of 2 games.  Homer Bailey (2-0, 0.69 ERA) will take the hill for Cincinnati while Carlos Zambrano (4-1, 5.35 ERA) will pitch for the North-Siders. Game time is set for 7:10 PM ET, and will be televised on Fox Sports Ohio.
