The Cincinnati Reds had a magic number of 1, they could clinch with a victory or a Cardinals loss to Pittsburgh. The only way the Reds could get a win is if they could do well against Houston's ace, Wandy Rodriguez. The Reds did not do well against him, but they did just enough to come away with a 3-2 victory over Houston, in dramatic fashion, which was not surprising that the Reds clinched in the way they did, here is how it all happened.
In the 1st inning, after 2 walks, then a double play, Stubbs was at 3rd with 2 outs and Scott Rolen at the plate. Scotty Rolen hit an RBI single, then would reach second thanks to a throwing error on 3rd baseman, Chris Johnson. 1-0 Reds on top.
The Astros would answer back in the 2nd, Jason Castro hit an RBI single to bring in Wallace, game tied at 1. Then, Wandy Rodriguez hit a sac/safety/suicide squeeze to plate Sanchez, 2-1 Astros.
Cincinnati had a great opportunity to blow the game open, with the bases loaded an no outs in the 6th. Jonny Gomes popped-up to the infield for the 1st out, but the next batter, Brandon Phillips hit an infield single to bring across Cabrera, 2-2 the score, next batter, Jay Bruce, grounded into a double play to end the inning.
In the bottom of the 8th, Drew Stubbs was at the plate with 2 outs, he crushed one to left field, just missing a home run by about a foot, but he would be left stranded at 2nd.
In the top of the 9th, the pitcher was Aroldis Chapman, he had a 1-2-3 inning, keeping the game tied at 2.
Jay Bruce was trying to make up for the double play that he grounded into in the 6th. He lead off the 9th inning. Guess what? VERY FIRST PITCH HE SEES, HE HITS HIGH, HE HITS IT WELL, HE HITS A...WALK-OFF HOME RUN TO GIVE THE REDS THEIR 1ST DIVISION TITLE IN 15 YEARS! 3-2 Reds win!
Congratulations to the Cincinnati Reds on clinching the National League Central Division.
Lets not forget about the pitching in this game, Edinson Volquez did great, 6 innings of 7 hit, 2 run baseball, but Aroldis Chapman will get the win.
See if the Reds can clinch the #2 seed in the NL. Watch the game on Wednesday at 7:10 PM ET on FS Ohio.
