Reds Close To Signing Veteran Outfielder Gary Matthews Jr.

The Reds are expected to sign veteran free agent Gary Matthews Jr. to a minor league contract in the next few days. The 35 year old outfielder had his best season in 2006 when he was with the Texas Rangers and hit .313 with 19 home runs and 79 RBIs. He was given  a 5-year contract worth $50 million by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim after his strong season four years ago. He never lived up to his contract in what many experts say is one of the worst contracts of all time. On January 22, 2010, the Angels traded him to the New York Mets for Brian Stokes. He was released by the New York Mets on June 15th after hit for a natural cycle in a game against the Detroit Tigers with a single for his first hit, a double for his second, a triple for his third, and a home run for his fourth. On June 28th of last season, he stole home vs the Chicago Cubs. On July 1st, 2006, Matthews made a brilliant catch robbing a home run vs the Houston Astros' Mike Lamb in what would be known as one of the best catches made in baseball history.
