SUGAR BOWL CHAMPIONS!

By:  Cooper Ledford

The Ohio State Buckeyes, who went 11-1 on the season, were in the Sugar Bowl, taking on the 10-2 Arkansas Razorbacks.  54% of Americans that voted online, said Ohio State would win, despite some ugly records.  One of those is 0-9.  That was the Buckeyes all-time record against SEC Teams in a bowl game, and if you didn't know, Arkansas is from that conference.  Perhaps 0-3 was one as well.  0-3 was the Big Ten's record vs. teams from the Southeastern Conference so far in bowl games this season.  Ohio State was looking to add a number 1 in front of those records, and roast the Hogs.  At first, it looked as if it would be rather easy.  It looked that way until the 2nd half, when things got tight.  But, Ohio State was able to hold on to win, 31-26.  Here is how.

To start things off, Terrelle Pryor was running towards the endzone, but then lost the ball.  Arkansas touched it twice, but was unable to get it, it went into the endzone, and the season MVP, Dane Sanzenbacher, picked it up for a touchdown for the Bucks.  Pryor and Sanzenbacher connecting, but not the way they imagined.  Barclay would add the point after, giving OSU a 7-0 lead.

Arkansas was trying to strike back, and that they did.  Ryan Mallet connected with Joe Adams, who had dropped some passes on their previous drive, for a 17 yard touchdown, the game was tied at 7.

The next time Ohio State scored was when Dan "Boom" Herron ran it in from 9 yards out, untouched, for the score.  14-7 Bucks on top at the end of the 1st quarter.

In the 2nd quarter, Ohio State would strike first, when Terrelle Pryor thew to the endzone and found Dane Sanzenbacher there to make a great catch, a 15 yard scoring play, and the Men Of The Scarlet And Gray went up 21-7.   Then, with just under 2 minutes left in the half, Terrelle Pryor and DeVier Posey connected for a 43 yard touchdown pass, and OSU was up 28-7.  Don't look now, but it is becoming some-what of a blow-out!

The Hogs would disagree, and march down the field on their next possession, and coming away with a Zach Hocker 20 yard field goal to make it 28-10 at the half.

The 2nd half would be pretty much dominated by Arkansas.

The Razorbacks would get a Hocker field goal with 09:14 to go in the 3rd, making it 28-13.

The Buckeyes would answer back with a Devin Barclay 46 yarder to make it 31-13, and it looks like Ohio State is gonna take control, right?

Maybe not.  After that, Ryan Mallet would connect with Jarius Wright for a 22 yard score, and then the Hogs would line up for 2, which would make it a 10-point game.  Mallet tossed it to D.J. Williams, and he was just able to bring his arm across the goal line to get the 2, 31-21 the score, and it is a game.  That would be the score at the end of the 3rd quarter.

In the 4th quarter, Pigsooie was the only one to score.  They would get a safety, as Dan Herron was tackled in the endzone by Bequette, the score became 31-23.  Then, Arkansas would get the ball back after the free kick, they marched down the field and came away with a Hocker field goal, this one for 47 yards, only a 5 point lead for OSU.

Late in the game, OSU was back to punt, but it was blocked.  That would give Arkansas the ball at the Ohio State 18 yard line, looks like they are gonna get a TD and win, right.  Wrong, Mallet was back to pass and was pressured, and then it happened.  Mallet made his only mistake of the night, he threw a pick.  Soloman Thomas was the man who picked it off, that would seal the deal, the Buckeyes win the 77th Sugar Bowl Classic, 31-26.

That is Ohio State's 1st win over an SEC Team in a Bowl Game.  Ohio State finishes 12-1.

Terrelle Pryor was named Sugar Bowl MVP, as he was 14/25, passed for 221 yards, and had 2 touchdowns.  TP also rushed for 115 yards off of 15 carries.

Ohio State's season is over, and the 2011 season will start on September 3rd at The 'Shoe against Akron.  That game, along with the next 4 games, will be played without Terrelle Pryor, Dan Herron, DeVier Posey, Soloman Thomas, and Mike Adams.  All 5 players had a big impact on the Sugar Bowl.
