1981. That was the year in which the Dayton Flyers last beat the Xavier Musketeers in a basketball game in Cincinnati. Since 1981 was before my time, I Googeled some things about that year. In '81 gas was about $1.38 per gallon, the president was Ronald Reagan, and the #1 song was "Kiss On My List" by Hall & Oates...never heard of it. Now, in 2011 gas is about $2.80 per gallon, Obama is the president, and the #1 song is "Grenade" by Bruno Mars. Anyways, Xavier was trying to keep the home-winning streak alive against the Dayton Flyers, and accomplish another thing. XU was trying to tie the A-10 record for consecutive home wins against an A-10 team, at 34 wins. They were able to do so as they win it 81-76.
A huge reason why the Muskies (11-5, 3-0 A-10) won was because of Tu Holloway's efforts, as he had 24 points, a huge leaning bank shot with 31 seconds left, and was named the MVP of the game, as he won the Blackburn/McCafferty Award.
For the Flyers (14-5, 2-2 A-10), Staten led the way with 17 points. Dayton also had help from Chris Johnson, as he had 16 points, and was 4-7 on three-point-shooting. Josh Benson added 11 points off the bench, while Paul Williams and Chris Wright also added 10 points.
Besides Tu Holloway, there were two other Musketeers in double-digits. Kenny Frease had a score (20
points) and Jamel McLean had 15 points.
This game went back-and-forth, as it had 10 ties, and 15 lead changes. It also never got out-of-hand for either team. UD's largest lead was 4, while XU's was 6.
So, Xavier goes to 11-5, and stay perfect in the A-10 at 3-0. Next, X will travel to Western New York to take on St. Bonaventure. That game will be Wednesday at 7:00 PM ET and on CBS College Sports.
