Xavier Rallies To Win Over WMU

By:  Cooper Ledford

The Xavier Musketeers were opening their season at home, as they were hosting the Western Michigan Broncos.  Xavier had won 24 consecutive home games, and 20 consecutive opening games, and they were trying to extend both of those streaks.  Well guess what?  They did.  But not easily.  The Broncos played a great game, but just fell short.  It came down to the final second.  Like legit.  No joke.  The final second.  The positive from WMU playing such a close games is that Xavier fans may not have to cut their finger nails, or lack of finger nails, for a while.  XU downs Western Michigan 68-65.

Xavier jumped out to a great start, with a 7-0 lead, but it would not last very long.  Before anyone knew it, the game was tied at 16, then the Broncos did not let the X-Men have the lead at all in the 1st half.  At the end of 1, it was 32-23 with WMU on top.

In the 2nd half, Xavier did not even tie it up until it was 42-42 with 10:32 to go.  The Muskies would soon give it up and not tie it up again until there was 6:01 to go and the score was 51-51.  But soon after that, Xavier would catch fire.  Tu Holloway mad some huge threes, there were some very important fouls, and some good defense. But, not only for XU, but also for WMU.

Soon, the X-Men had a pretty comfortable lead, it was by 5, 66-61.  But, with the help of turnovers and fouls, Western Michigan only trailed by 3.  With only 2 seconds left, after some free throw attempts, the Broncos would get the ball back.  Flenard Whitfield got the ball, tried for the three, but just missed as it hit the rim.  It was close, but no cigar.  So the Musketeers of Xavier have now won 25 consecutive home games, and 21 consecutive openers.

Tu, formerly known as Terrell, Holloway lead the way as he put up 25 points, and had help from Dante Jackson, as he put up 17 points, and then there was The Big Ken, Kenny Frease, who had 14 points, and had 7 boards.

Xavier is now holy cow, undefeated, amazing right?  They will next host IPFW, whatever that stands for.  Game time is set for 7:00 PM ET and will be on Fox Sports Ohio on Tuesday.
