Arroyo Brilliant in Game 1 vs Chicago
The Cincinnati Reds were victorious this afternoon with a 3-0 win over the Chicago Cubs. Bronson Arroyo pitched seven shut out innings giving up just five hits and had seven strikeouts. Tom Gorzelanny would take the mound for the Cubs and picked up his sixth loss of the season. Gorzelanny went seven innings giving up four hits and three earned runs. Francisco Cordero nailed down his 30th save of the season and escaped a jam walking two batters in the bottom of the 9th.
Ryan Hanigan hit a two-run blast to left center field in the top of the 2nd inning that also scored Jay Bruce. Cincinnati would break the tie with a 2-0 lead. In the top of the 7th inning, Brandon Phillips singled on a ground ball to left fielder Tyler Colvin scoring Paul Janish. Cincinnati took a 3-0 lead after that play. That would be the old ball game. You can catch tomorrow's game at 1:05 PM ET. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Ohio and you can catch the game on the radio at 700-WLW. Edinson Volquez (2-1, 6.35 ERA) will be making his fourth start since coming off the disabled list and will square off against Randy Wells (5-9, 4.40 ERA).
Other news and notes; the Reds made a roster move today removing Drew Sutton from the 40-man MLB roster too perhaps make a move to acquire another bat to help bolster the Reds line up. Rumors have it that the Reds may have interest in Vernon Wells or former Cincinnati Red Jose Guillen who was designated for assignment yesterday by the Kansas City Royals. Guillen was a Cincinnati Red until July 2003 when he was traded to the Oakland Athletics in exchange for Aaron Harang, Joe Valentine, and Jeff Bruksch. The Cleveland Indians would claim Drew Sutton off of waivers. Teams were circling like vultures once the Reds took Sutton off of the 40-man roster so he really never stood a real chance to stick within the Cincinnati organization.
