The Cincinnati Reds shut out the Pittsburgh Pirates tonight 4-0. Travis Wood picked up his 2nd consecutive win going 7 innings and recorded 4 strikeouts. Wood only gave up two hits on the night. The Reds called up veteran reliever Russ Springer from AAA Louisville and optioned Carlos Fisher back to the Bats today. Springer made his Reds debut pitching one inning and gave up just one hit. He had one strike out on the night. Springer who had retired decided to come back when the Reds came calling around the All-Star Break, he had always wanted to pitch for the Reds since he was a fan of the Big Red Machine growing up.
In the top of the 1st inning, Miguel Cairo singled to left fielder Jose Tabata and Brandon Phillips scored. 1-0 CIN. In the top of the 3rd inning,Ryan Hanigan grounded out to first baseman Garrett Jones and Jonny Gomes scord on the play. 2-0 CIN. Miguel Cairo hit a sac fly to right fielder Lastings Milledge in the top of the 4th that scored Brandon Phillips. The Reds take a 3-0 lead. In the top of the 8th inning, perhaps the most exciting play in all of baseball occured. Chris Heisey would hit an INSIDE THE PARK HOMERUN and gave the Reds a 4-0 lead. Ryan Hanigan came close to doing that on Saturday vs the Braves but this one they couldn't take back. Congratulations to Chris Heisey. The former #1 Reds minor leaguer of the year deserves more playing time.
