Reds Drop 1st Game In Houston

By:  Cooper Ledford

The 1st place Cincinnati Reds were in Texas taking on the 3rd place Astros.  The Reds were trying to lower their magic number, which was at 10.  But, instead Houston beat the Reds 5-3 despite Johnny Cueto pitching a solid game.  Here is how it all happened.

The 'Stros got on the board first, in the 1st inning when Chris Johnson (not the running back for the Titans) hit a sac fly to bring in Sanchez, 1-0 Astros on top.  Make it 2-0 after a 2nd inning RBI single from Michael Bourn, that would plate the pitcher, Wandy Rodriguez.

The Reds had the bases loaded with 1 out in the 3rd, but got no runs.  That is something the Reds MUST improve on, capitalizing on opportunities.  If and when they make the playoffs, the Reds will do squat if they cannot bring runners in when they have an opportunity.

But, the Reds did take advantage of an opportunity in the 6th.  Rodriguez had a no-no going, until a double by Votto, then a walk to Rolen, and that would bring up Jonny Gomes with no outs, he homered to left, 17th long ball of the year, and the Reds had a 3-2 lead.  But, it would not last long at all.

In the home half of the 6th, Carlos Lee hit his 22nd touch-'em-all hit, and the game was tied at 3.  Houston would then take the lead in the 7th when Sanchez hit a 2 RBI single off of Chapman, 5-3 the score, and the final score.  The Reds are now 83-64, the Cardinals won, so they are 6 games up, the Reds are, and the magic number remains at 10.

Watch tomorrow as the Reds will try and even the series, as Bronson Arroyo (15-10, 4.05 ERA) and the Redlegs will battle Nelson Figueroa (3-1, 3.27 ERA) and the Astros.  Game time is set for 7:05 PM ET and will be televised on Fox Sports Ohio.
