Cincinnati Breaks out the Brooms and Sweep Chicago


Cincinnati's offense shined today with sluggers Scott Rolen, Brandon Phillips, Drew Stubbs, and Laynce Nix all on the bench resting up for the three game series vs St. Louis. They defeat the Cubs 11-4. Travis Wood got his 3rd consecutive win. He went 6.1 innings, gave up four runs, four hits, and struck out three. Thomas Diamond got the loss for Chicago. He went three inings and gave up five runs and struck out one batter. For the first time since 2002, Cincinnati went into Wrigley Field and swept them three games to none.

In the first inning, Jay Bruce hit a double that scored Joey Votto and Jonny Gomes. 2-0 Reds. Ryan Hanigan would score on a sac fly hit by Chris Heisey in the top of the 3rd to give Cincinnati a 3-0 lead. Juan Francisco flied into a force out in right field that scored Joey Votto on the play. Reds up by four. Cincinnati would close out the 3rd inning when Ryan Hanigan hit a sac fly to right fielder Xavier Nady scoring Jonny Gomes and Cincinnati leads 5-0.

In the top of the 5th, Juan Francisco grounded into another force out to SS Starlin Castro and 2B Jeff Baker that scored Joey Votto. 6-0 Reds. Ryan Hanigan would hit another sac fly that scored Jonny Gomes and the Reds would be up by seven. In the 7th inning, Paul Janish hit a single that scored Jonny Gomes and Cincinnati will take an 8-0 lead. The Cubs would finally get on the board when Jeff Baker hit a solo home run to left center field. The Reds lead 8-1. Juan Francisco made a throwing error at 3B that allowed Derrek Lee to score. The lead would be cut to six. The Cubs would not be done though, Xavier Nady hit a ground rule double into the ivy in left field that scored Marlon Byrd. The Reds lead would be cut in half after the 7th leading 8-4.

The Reds would get two more runs back in the top of the 8th inning when Joey Votto hit his 28th home run of the season to left field and Miguel Cairo scored too. Cincinnati leads 10-4. In the top of the 9th, Miguel Cairo hit his first triple of the season scoring Chris Heisey and the Reds would win 11-4. Cincinnati will start a huge three game series tomorrow vs the St. Louis Cardinals with a two game lead after the Cardinals game in Florida was postponed. Mike Leake and Chris Carpenter will be on the mound to start game one.
