Leake Terrible, Reds Pounded

By:  Cooper Ledford

It was the biggest series of the season so far for both the Reds and Cardinals.  It was a match-up of the only two teams in the NL Central that are contending to win the division.  It looked like a pitchers duel until the 4th, where Leake gave up 7 runs, and Carpenter never looked bad except for a tiny bump in the 7th.  The Reds end up losing 7-3 in Jim Edmond's Reds debut.  Here is how it all happened.

As I said, the Cards got all 7 runs in the 4th.  The first was off the bat of Matt Holliday, as he hit an RBI single to plate Jon Jay, 1-0 the score.  Make it 2-0 after the RBI single by Rasmus to plate Pujols.  Then, with the bases loaded and nobody out, the batter was Skip Schumaker, guess what he did.  He hit a 4-run home run, a grand slam, the worst thing that could happen, and now the game transformed to a laugher, 6-0.  Then, Albert Pujols would bring in the final run of the inning, with an RBI single. And thank the Lord, the inning was over, but the game at that point was well over.

The Reds would avoid the shut-out, as they scored twice in the 7th as Ramon Hernandez and Juan Francisco both got RBI hits, Hernandez with a double and Francisco with a single.  In the 9th inning, Ramon Hernandez showed the sell-out crowd (which most of them went home after the 4th inning) that he could hit a home run.  That made the score 7-3, and that is how she finished.

Mike Leake is the loser, as he suffers his worst career outing.  His second worst was his last outing vs. the Pirates.  So Mike Leake, perhaps has ran out of gas, and his season may be over.

The winner is Chris Carpenter, as he went 7 strong innings, giving up 5 hits, 2 runs, walked 3, and fanned 5.

The Reds are still in 1st place, but the lead is cut in half, but the Reds can still take the next two games, which I hope they do, and can increase their lead to 3 games.

Tomorrow should be a much better pitching game for the Reds, as it will be Johnny Cueto pitching for Cincinnati, and pitching for the red birds, it will be the outstanding rookie pitcher, Jaime Garcia.  Game time is set for 7:10 PM ET and will be on FS Ohio, and 700 WLW.
