Reds Start Fish Fry, Beat Johnson

By:  Cooper Ledford

As Dusty Baker was starting his 2 game suspension, bench coach, Chris Speier was playing the part on manager.  Oh no, that can't be good, we don't have our manager, and we are playing the against the BEST pitcher in all of baseball, Josh Johnson.  Well, it was just fine.  The Reds had no problem getting hits and runs off of Josh Johnson, who was sporting an ERA of 1.97.  The Reds end up winning, 7-2.  A lot of players with multi hit games, and a great pitching performance by Edinson Volquez.  Here is how it all happened.

The Reds got on the board in the 1st inning, when Joey Votto hit an RBI single to plate Phillips, 1-0 the score.  Then, next batter, Scott Rolen hit an RBI single to bring in Layne Nix, 2-0 the score.  Then, 3-0 would be the score after an RBI single by Jay Bruce.  The Reds opened the game with 4 strait singles, and were being patient.  That would be it for the scoring in the 1st, but they would be back at it later.

In the 3rd inning, Jay Bruce reached on a fielder's choice, that would allow Rolen to score, 4-0 the score.  Then, in the 4th, Joey Votto hit an RBI single to plate Phillips, and the score was 5-0.  Can you believe that?  Already 5 runs off of the best pitcher in the bigs?  But, then again, the Reds do have the best offense in the NL.  Back to the game, same inning (4th), Scotty Rolen hit an RBI double to plate Votto, and it was 6-0.

In the 5th inning, Jay Bruce, yes, I said JAY BRUCE hit a groundout, popout, single, no...a HOME RUN!  That is his first home run since June 30th off of Roy Halladay.  He could have hit another one against the Rockies, but Dexter Fowler robbed him, daggonit.  But, Jay Brrruuuuuucccccee made the lead bigger, the score 7-0.

The Fish would get on the board in the 6th, when Mike Stanton hit his 13th home run of the season, a solo home run, and it was 7-1.  Then, in the 8th, Mike Stanton would hit another home run, once again a solo home run, 7-2 the score.  So Stanton was responsible for ALL TWO of Florida's runs.

So the game would finish with the score of 7-2.  Josh Johnson had his worst start of the season, giving up a season-high 6 runs.  That 1.97 ERA of his has jumped to 2.27 after the Reds pounded him.  Even though the Reds had only 1 more hit than Florida, they beat them up.

Edinson Volquez made another fabulous start, he went 6 innings, gave up 8 hits, 1 ER, walked 2, and fanned 6.  Edinson's ERA drops to 4.25.  So, the Reds are back on track it appears, and they are back to being 14 games over .500, and are now sporting a record of 65-51.  The Cardinals are currently beating the Cubs (dang), 4-2 in the 7th, but those Cubbies can rally.  If the Cards hold on to win (hope they don't) they will keep a 1 game lead over the Reds for 1st place in the NL Central.

Tomorrow's game is set for 7:10 PM ET, as it will be Mike Leake (7-4, 3.75 ERA) on the hill for the Redlegs, for the Marlins it will be Sean West (0-1, 7.20 ERA).  The game will be televised on FS Ohio, and you can listen to it on 700 WLW.
